Fish stories By "Bayou" Bill Scifres
If you cross the path of a fisherman, tradition dictates that at least one of you (namely, the angler) has at one time or another spun a tale about a fish that got away. Those fish just seem to grow bigger, fight harder, or do other Herculean things if they escape.
With this thought in mind, we submit that leading psychologists and other defenders say that anglers who stretch the truth are not, we repeat NOT, sick or otherwise plagued with ailing-in-the-head. In their minds, that's the way it was.
One of fishingdom's greatest fabrications concerns the Lost River, which dives underground at one place and comes up at another.
This guy says it used to be a normal river, flowing freely on the earth. One day he and his father were setting a trout line in this deep hole. They were using a very strong cable to thwart the brute strength of the monster fish known to dwell there.
They returned next morning to check the line. But they couldn't find it. They couldn't even find the river. They deduced that in tying the two ends of the cable to concrete corner posts on both sides of the river, they had created an unstoppable force. The fish exerted such force when it hit the cable that it pulled the two banks together, creating the Lost River.
In another story, first feller says to the other feller, "Say, I was fishing t'other day in The Big Hole and hooked a fish so big I couldn't get it in. Got some diving equipment and found the fish sitting underwater in a new Buick, reading by the light of a lantern."
"I know they get big there," other feller says, "I caught a bluegill there that weighed 40 pounds."
First feller says: "I don't believe it. Bluegills don't get that big."
Second feller says: "If you'll blow out the lantern, I'll cut 20 pounds off the bluegill."
