Help Slow Global Warming
4 Jun 2008

If one person takes steps to cut carbon emissions, then another and another, we can do a lot to slow global warming. Here are some ideas.

Save electricity. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs; add an insulated blanket to your water heater if it's warm to the touch; turn computers and TV sets completely off when they won't be used for four hours or more. Use a clothes line part of the time instead of a clothes dryer.

Get geothermal heat. It uses water that is already partly heated or cooled because it comes from under the ground.

Ride the bus. Transport, including cars, accounts for 30 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions.

Pay bills online. Eliminating the paper waste reduces fuel consumption by trucks that transport paper checks. If everyone did it, it would curb emissions by 2.1 million tons a year, according to Javelin Strategy & Research.

Open the window instead of running the air conditioner. Most of the 25 tons of CO2 emissions each American is responsible for come from the home. Turn the thermostat up a little in summer.
