Essential Hiking Tips
10 Jun 2008

If on one nice sunny day, you and your pals decide to hike through the woods, or maybe go climbing, here are some things you should know.

* Getting stung. Most stings just bring discomfort for a few hours. If you experience full-body swelling, hives, rashes, or itching in the lymph nodes or groin, you need help fast. First, take an antihistamine like Benadryl, then get yourself to a hospital.

* Snake bite. Josh Bernstein, CEO of Boulder Outdoor Survival School, says: Stay clam and keep the wound below your heart. Then get to a doctor. Don't suck out the poison and don't inject yourself with antivenom.

* Thirst. Water is essential. You need it to keep your body, blood, and brain functioning. Bernstein, quoted in Men's Fitness, recommends a cup of water every 20 minutes. Look for bright-green trees, bees, birds and other signs of water nearby.

* Beat the heat. If you're tired, sweaty, overheated, and fatigued, you probably have heat exhaustion. Drink lots of fluids and get out of the sun.

Heat stroke is life threatening. If you, or a member of your party, are delirious or unresponsive, you need to be cooled quickly and rehydrated.
