Be Safe with Fireworks
15 Jun 2008
Fireworks and celebrations go together but using them safely is essential to preventing serious injury.
When you buy fireworks, be sure to buy only from reliable sellers. Don't carry fireworks in your pocket. (Never try to make your own.)
Once you have them home, make sure to keep them away from children while they are stored. A bright 10-year-old might think he or she knows just how to use fireworks but the result of that experimentation could be an injury or a fire.
At family celebrations, make sure you supervise even when kids are using fireworks like sparklers. Never give fireworks to small children.
To set off rockets or noisemakers, select a clear area where there are no other flammables.
Wear safety glasses, and be sure that no part of your body is above a firework when you light it.
Have a bucket of water or a hose handy so you can douse any that don't go off. Remember a rocket can easily fly to the top of a house or into an area of dried brush.
Don't go near spent fireworks for 10 or 15 minutes.
Watch each piece to make sure it goes off properly. Never try to relight a firecracker or display piece. If a piece is a "dud", douse it with water.
Don't shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
Light one firework at a time; remember that you're not a pyrotechnical engineer.
Be sure you or your kids don't point or throw a firecracker at anyone.
When the fun is over, rake up the fireworks trash and soak it with water before putting it in the trash can.
If you must go into the house before doing this, be sure to take the children with you. They could pick up something that is still hot or may still go off before you can soak it.
