Time to Think About a Fall Garden
15 Jul 2008

A fall garden can extend growing time

As you harvest your spring plantings, remember that you don't have to look forward to the coming months without fresh vegetables. Late July and August are perfect times to put in cool-weather crops. Many varieties are available.

Beets, Chinese cabbage, collards, mustard, radishes, spinach, Swiss chard, green onions, and lettuce are a few semi-hardy vegetables that will withstand temperatures as low as 30 degrees.

Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, carrots, turnips and kale are very hardy. They can tolerate several frosts as long as temperatures stay above 20 degrees.

When selecting fall gardening seeds, look for such descriptions as "Winter" and "North Pole." If you are uncertain about a plant's hardiness, check the number of days to maturity as shown on the seed packet.

Loosen the soil with a hoe or tiller to prepare planting beds. Replace nutrients used by spring plantings with an all-purpose organic fertilizer and a magnesium and calcium supplement such as Aggrene Liquid Lime.

For best results, make sure your garden gets an inch of water in a single watering every week. Use a rain gauge to measure the amount of precipitation the garden gets from rain.
