Have Allergies? Minimize Fumes From Carpet
24 Jul 2008
When it comes to chemical emissions, new carpet, padding, or glue can temporarily cause pollution in your home. They emit VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which concerns the Environmental Protection Agency.
Though VOCs from carpeting are not known to make most people ill, those who have asthma or allergies should take precautions. To minimize irritation, experts quoted in UC Berkeley Wellness Letter advise:
* Buy material with the green label of the Carpet and Rug Institute Indoor Air Quality Testing Program. It meets government standards.
* Ask if the carpet can be unrolled and aired out before installation.
* Vacuum old carpets before removal, and clean floors before new material is installed.
* Buy carpets in warm weather when you can have windows open.
* Ventilate the house for two or three days after installation. Open windows and use fans. (After three days, emissions are negligible.)
* Keep infants and small kids off the carpet until it is aired out.
* Keep outdoor allergens out of carpets by vacuuming often and removing or changing from shoes to slippers at the door.
