Parking Lot Survival
28 Jul 2008
The insurer ITT Hartford Group says parking-lot accidents account for a high number of claims. They say one problem is with drivers, many of whom don't consider navigating the lot to be real driving. Often rules aren't posted, and no one is sure who has the right of way.
They suggest that drivers think "school zone" in a parking lot. Conditions are similar. People may dart out unexpectedly, pedestrians wander about.
Other advice:
* Slow down or stop at aisle intersections.
* Obey the rules and customs of the lot.
* Watch for clues such as brake lights or exhaust that indicate a vehicle will back out.
* Turn off the radio and open a window so you can hear cars and people you don't see.
