Quirky PGA cut policy comes under fire

Under the PGA Tour regulations, anyone who withdraws or is disqualified for any reason after making the cut is paid for last place.

The new cut policy approved in November states that only the top 70 scores and ties will make the cut. If the number exceeds 78 players, only the closest number to 70 players can compete on the weekend.

In a January 6 event, 18 players, including U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera and John Daley made the cut but had to go home. Those players were paid $9,699 that counts on the money list for the FedEXCup and 46 points.

At the same tournament, Kenneth Ferrie withdrew because of food poisoning on Saturday. He was paid for last place, less money than 18 players with higher scores, and got no FedExCup points.

John Daley says it's a stupid rule, and some other players agree.

The rule was approved by the policy board to avoid weekends on tour when players are grouped in threesomes and start off both tees, sometimes leading to 5 1/2 hour rounds.
